The Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) once again demonstrated its commitment to staff wellbeing and holistic development with the successful celebration of its third edition of Fruits and Fitness Day. Held simultaneously across all IDL centres: Kumasi, Kwabenya, Adenta, McCarthy, Takoradi and Tamale Centres. The event brought together staff for a day of physical activity, healthy eating, and team bonding in the Institute’s branded T-Shirts for the event under the theme: “Promoting Wellness Through Play, Learning and Healthy Living.”
Kumasi Centre: Tennis and Togetherness
At the Kumasi Centre, the day began with a spirited walk from the IDL premises to the tennis court, where approximately 50 staff members, many first-time players, were introduced to the basics of tennis. Guided by professional coaches, participants learned ball control, forehand techniques, and volleying. The court buzzed with laughter and cheers as staff engaged in friendly play. The session ended with a refreshing fruit feast and brisk walk back to the office reinforcing the importance of balance between work and wellness.
Kwabenya Centre: Aerobics for fitness
The Kwabenya Centre of the KNUST Institute of Distance Learning recorded enthusiastic staff participation during the third annual Fruits and Fitness Day. Held on the compound of the facility, the event featured a professionally supervised 45-minute fitness session, incorporating cardiovascular workouts, flexibility training, and team-based exercises.
Following the invigorating session, staff gathered to enjoy a fruit feast sponsored by the Institute, reinforcing the day’s message of healthy living and balanced nutrition.
Adenta Centre: Energizing Start and Team Bonding
At Adenta, the event kicked off with warm-up exercises, jumping jacks, stretching, short races, and group games. These activities promoted cardiovascular health, flexibility, and stress relief. Staff feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many noting improved morale and a desire for more frequent wellness events.
McCarthy Centre: Hilltop Resilience and Indoor Fun
The McCarthy Centre began its celebration with an opening prayer and a motivational address. Staff embarked on a walk to the summit of McCarthy Hill and around the community to promote visibility and endurance. Back at the centre, aerobic routines, dancing, and indoor games like Ludo, Oware, and Scrabble created a lively and engaging atmosphere. A colorful fruit display, including bananas, mangoes, pineapples, and apples, refreshed participants after the workout.
Takoradi Centre: Coastal Wellness Experience
In Takoradi, staff took their fitness activities to the beach, enjoying refreshing workouts and swimming sessions amidst the cool sea breeze. The serene environment added a unique touch to the day’s activities. A variety of fruits were served to replenish energy and promote healthy metabolism, making the beachside event both relaxing and revitalizing.
Tamale Centre: Embraces Fitness with Football and Aerobics
Staff at the Tamale Centre actively participated in a lively session of football and aerobics, promoting physical wellbeing and team spirit.
The energetic activities fostered camaraderie and provided a refreshing break from routine work. Following the workout, participants gathered to enjoy a variety of fresh fruits, reinforcing the day’s theme of healthy living and balanced nutrition. The Director of the Institute Prof. Anthony Andrews noted that a healthy workforce is a productive workforce “I am proud of the enthusiasm our staff bring to these initiatives, and we remain dedicated to nurturing an environment where both minds and bodies thrive.”
The third edition of Fruits and Fitness Day has once again proven the value of corporate wellness initiatives. With full participation, enthusiastic feedback, and visible improvements in staff morale and interaction, the event stands as a testament to IDL’s commitment to holistic staff development.
